Broward County High School Baseball Skills Competition

Monday, February 1st, 2010 - My name is Albert Destrade and I am the Head Baseball coach at Plantation High. It is my pleasure to extend to all of you an invitation to the inaugural Broward County High School Baseball Skills Competition.

Where: Hosted at Plantation High School on 6901 NW 16th Street Plantation, FL 33313
When: Friday, February 5th, 2010 at 6:30pm

The purpose of this event is twofold. Firstly, our goal is to host a highly fun and energetic kick-start to our 2010 spring baseball season. Additionally, we aim to provide an opportunity for local Broward highschool ballplayers to come out and showcase the great wealth of baseball talent our county has to offer.

The event is completely free for all participants and is open to family, friends, coaches and fans to come out and supports the competitors. Fans can enjoy free giveaways and great raffle prizes. The event itself and is divided into 5 separate competitions. Each competition will each have 2 classifications. The Freshman and Sophomore players will compete in one class, while the Juniors and Seniors will compete in the other.

The 5 scheduled events are as follows:

EVENTS

Fastest Man Around the Bases
Contestants will start at home plate and attempt to record the fastest time all the way around the bases. The top 3 finishers from round 1 will advance to the finals. The best time in the final round will decide the event's winner.

Pitcher Accuracy
Contestants will be given 8 pitches from the mound and will attempt to connect with any of the 3 cones that are setup at home plate. The cones will be propped about knee-high off the ground, with two cones set directly on either corner of the plate and one cone splitting the plate down the middle. 1 point will be awarded for each cone successfully knocked off and 3 bonus points will be awarded if the contestant knocks down all three cones during his round. Any fallen cones will be replaced prior to each pitch. At the conclusion of round one the top 3 will advance to the finals. The best score in the finals will decide the event's winner.

3-Man Relay
Relay teams will be comprised of three spots, one catcher, one infielder and one outfielder. The catcher will begin the relay in a catchers crouch behind homeplate. The infielder will be set between two cones directly over the second base bag. The outfielder will be set between two cones in centerfield. The relay will begin when the ball is pitched to catcher (by an event administrator). The clock will start when the ball touches the catcher's mitt and the catcher will then throw the ball to the infielder. The IF will then relay it to the outfielder in CF who will throw the ball back to the infielder who will relay it back to catcher to complete round. The relay will be timed and the teams with the top 3 times will advance to the finals. The best time in the finals will decide the event's winner.

Longest Toss
Each contestant will start at home plate and attempt 3 throws in toward centerfield .  Two cones will be set as markers to determine the area in which the throws must land in order to be considered "in bounds". Each throw will be spotted at the point where the baseball first makes contact with the ground. The player's best throw of the three will be his mark for the round. The top 3 marks will advance to the finals. The best mark in the finals will decide the event's winner.

There is also a scheduled Home Run Derby at the event.
We are truly excited about this event and certainly encourage every program in the county to come out and represent your school by competing or by showing support for the participants in the event.

Coaches, I will urge you to take an objective and impartial view of your projected rosters and select players whose abilities might be suitable to make for a competitive event. Remember, there are classifications for both upper and lower classmen so keep the youth in your program in mind when you decide who to nominate for the event.

The number of slots and how they are divvied up for each event will be determined on a first-come first-serve basis. Please inform any interested players who wish to sign up for the event to contact me or my assistant coach Brant Spring (954) 260-955/ baseball513@yahoo.com. If you have any questions feel free to contact us anytime.

Thank you for your time and I hope to see all of you out at the yard!
